James E. Dean (d 2006 December 26 aged 29) was an American soldier who was shot dead by police for refusing to go to Iraq.

In December James was ordered to report to Fort Benning, Georgia, on 2007 January 14, for service in Iraq. In the evening on December 25 he has barricaded himseslf inside his fatherʼs house threatening to commit suicide rather than report for this service. He has already served 12 months in Afghanistan after being ordered to do so as a reservist.

It has been claimed that he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and he was dependant on the anti-depression medication.
