Watching Truth is a cross-over musical group from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Founded in December of 2001, Watching Truth plays a series of different styles of music--from hip-hop to rock to ballads. The band consists of Eric Dempsey and Jonathan Wesphal.

Eric Dempsey[edit]

Eric Dempsey is the primary rapper, violinist, backup singer, secondary pianist, and songwriter for Watching Truth. Dempsey was born Eric Kenneth Dutkiewicz on July 7, 1985 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He also goes by the nickname "prince charming" in many of the group's rap songs. Dempsey became active in music in 1991, when he took up violin at Weisser Park Elementary School in Fort Wayne. He is classically trained using the Suzuki method. His first violin was a 1/10 size rental. Today, Dempsey plays a full size violin, named "Ol' Brown Sugar" purchased in 1997.

Dempsey attends Ball State University, studying Telecommunications and minoring in Spanish and Political Science. He plans to graduate in May of 2008.

Jonathan Wesphal[edit]

Jonathan Wesphal is the lead vocalist, guitarist, pianist, and secondary rapper for Watching Truth. Wesphal was born Jonathan Westfall Holloway in March of 1986. He is also sometimes regarded as Jonny Wesphal and Jon Wesphal.

Wesphal attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee in the fall of 2005. He has since transfered to IPFW.

Formation of the Group[edit]

Dempsey and Wesphal are childhood friends, growing up in Fort Wayne. Both of their parents were in a group called the Couples' Club that held monthly events, mainly campouts during Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends.

Also, both attended Blackhawk Middle School and R. Nelson Snider High School in Fort Wayne. Dempsey graduated in 2004 and Wesphal in 2005.

Watching Truth was formed in December of 2001. As a Christmas present, Wesphal received a multi-track recorder from his parents, allowing him to record demos to be sent out in mp3 files. Wesphal's dad, Steve Holloway sent a recording of "Passing Us By" to Dempsey's dad, Ed Dutkiewicz, which Dempsey listened to and immediately liked it.

Dempsey would frequently visit Wesphal at his home and would write and record music in his basement. The basement is now used as Watching Truth's recording studio, Piss~Stained Studios. This basement/studio was also a place where the group would rehearse for occassional visits to local coffee houses in Fort Wayne.
