Cold War
The Cold War was a nonviolent conflict between the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, occurring from 1949 to 1991. This conflict arose from a number of factors, most prominently the ideological differences between the democratic United States and the communist Soviet Union. An additional cause was the development of nuclear weapons by both superpowers and their allies. While the Cold War itself did not involve any direct armed conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, they did fight in a number of proxy wars.
Opposing Sides[edit]
On one side of the conflict was the United States and her allies. These included France and the United Kingdom. They were organized into NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. On the other side was the Soviet Union and her allies. China was originally an ally of the Soviet Union, but relations soured in the 1960s. Other notable allies were Cuba and Vietnam.
