phase (matter)

Phase refers to the condition that a given amount of matter is in, which is dependent on it heat. The four states of matter are, in increasing oder of heat, solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. Plasma is not always accounted when talking about phases because it is relatively rare in ordinary conditions.
