The Russian Civil War was an internal conflict in Russia from 1917 to 1922. It was a result of the Russian defeat in World War I, as well as the incompetence and political backwardness of the regime. The revolutionaries were communist Bolsheviks, known as "Reds", while the internationally-backed tsarists were known as "Whites". Eventually, the Bolsheviks succeeded and established the Soviet Union.
