Linear media is a new name for the traditional broadcast formats of radio and television (audio & video) provided by terrestrial, satellite and cable operators. Essentially, linear media output restrict the recipient to consuming the content from beginning to end over time.
The first recorded use of the term in Great Britain was by Nick Pollard, Head of Sky (BSkyB) news on a BBC Radio 4 broadcast of The Message on Friday 2006 January 20.
Non-linear media is the opposite of this and encompasses such things as VOD.
