animal grazing has negative impacts on the land
From Anarchopedia
Revision as of 04:38, 5 January 2011 by Anarchangel (Talk | contribs) (....Scope of the problem on both Arguments & Objections sides. Nutrients)
Arguments
- animal grazing causes soil compaction
- animal grazing causes soil acidification
- animal grazing causes erosion and topsoil loss
- animal grazing creates a bias for predominance of nuisance plant and animal species
- grazing animals provide an environment for parasites, which can then spread to humans
- fencing of land for grazing impedes natural animal movements, and affects biosystems
- All of the effects stated in these arguments against animal grazing are increasingly problematic as the number of animals increases, to the point of ecological disaster
Objections
- soil compaction would be eliminated if we use native animals
- Nitrogen in animal feces is a catalyst to assist the breakdown of plant materials; provides organic nutrients and organic matter, and micronutrients for organisms such as fungal mycorrhiza, (which aid plants in absorbing nutrients); in short, it is fertilizer.
- All of the effects stated in the arguments against animal grazing are decreasingly problematic as the number of animals decreases, to a point where they are no greater than in natural ecosystems, in the practices used by nomadic herding cultures
