soil compaction would be eliminated if we use native animals

Arguments[edit]

It is true that Kangaroos cause less damage in the Australian environment to the land, since they do not possess the hard hooves of introduced species such as cattle and sheep. Many native species evolved in parallel with the Kangaroo, and are not adversely affected by its presence.

However, it is not feasible to replace current meat production systems with Kangaroos for a number of reasons, including:

  • Technical Feasibility. Kangaroos are fast moving and can jump very high fences. The costs associated with their management are increased.
  • Cultural Objections. While people are conditioned to accept the consumption of cattle flesh, there is widespread objection to the consumption of Kanagaroos, the National symbol of Australia, and widely appreciated for their appealing nature and friendliness to humans.
  • It is more likely that the market for meat will gradually reduce and be eliminated, before a way is found to create large scale economic markets for Kangaroo meat.
