A Benevolent Dictator is a person with absolute or near absolute control over something, but who has the interests of their subjects at heart.
Linus Torvalds has been called a Benevolent Dictator, in that he maintains great authority and veto power over the Linux kernel, even if he is generally considered open and hard-working towards the goals of the community. Torvalds believes that if he did not keep those goals in mind, the masses would simply go elsewhere.
Pioneer programmer Justin Frankel has also been described as a benevolent dictator.
