Christine Assange is a social and political activist and the mother of Wikipedia:Julian Assange. In 2006 (then using the surname "Hawkins"), she was the organiser of "The Great Australian Bikini March", a protest that called upon Australian women to wear bikinis and march on a Melbourne Islamic centre in protest at remarks by Muslim clerics about immodestly dressed women.[1][2] The march was scheduled to take place on the first anniversary of the Cronulla riots. Interviewed by ABC radio, Assange (who at the time was using the surname Hawkins) described herself as "a veteran bikini wearer" and called for the Australian government to introduce new citizenship legislation to weed out "extremists" [3] The protest gained national and international attention, but was first postponed and later cancelled after being promoted by far-right organisations.[4] The event website blamed negative media coverage for the cancellation. In 2011 an article in Wikipedia:The Monthly reported that Hawkin's son helped to organize the website and had mentioned it on his blog.[5]

When allegations of rape and sexual assault and a European Arrest Warrant were issued in relation to her son, Julian Assange, she vocally supported him, giving interviews to Australian and international media and addressing rallies.[6][7]
In April 2012, Channel 10 announced that Rachel Griffiths would play the role of Christine Assange alongside Alex Williams as Julian in the telemovie Underground[8]
In July 2012, she travelled to Ecuador, to help facilitate the asylum proceedings for Julian,[9] and met with Ecuadorean president Rafael Correa (WP)[10][11] Ecuadorean officials are postponing their announcement of their decision on his asylum until after the mid-August end of the London Olympic Games.[12] In an interview with Russia Today (WP) (RT), she said of Julian that "as soon as the United States was embarrassed – his life became threatened".[13]
