Political nihilism

From Anarchopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Nihilism is a revolutionary political doctrine that advocates the destruction of the established social order and status quo, in order to bring about overall change. It was primarily a Russian phenomenon that began in the 1800s in opposition to Tsar Nicholar I. Mikhail Bakunin was one of the most prominent and influential anarchist thinkers who advocated nihilism as a reaction to Marxism, which he believed inevitably led to totalitarianism.

While nihilism is connected with anarchist thought, it is not the same. Nihilism advocates political change through violence, and is totally opposed to any form of authority or community organization.
