Party for Socialism and Liberation
The Party for Socialism and Liberation was formed in 2004.
On May 16, 2004, several members of the Workers World Party (WWP) resigned from the party. Other WWPers split along with them as well, including most of the WWP's San Francisco branch, much of its Los Angeles branch, as well as members from WWP branches in Washington DC, Chicago and New York City. Many of the people who left had been heavily involved in Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, which was focused on building coalitions against imperialism, especially the invasion of Iraq, as well as domestic issues. Some of the reasons for the split revolved around disputes over working with ANSWER versus building the party, and the lack of recent recruitment into the WWP. Another dispute was over the national question, with those leaving feeling the WWP was engaging in reverse racism. Dozens of people left the WWP.
In the months following the split, the faction that left founded the Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSL), created a web site, produced literature, began producing a well-designed magazine, Socialism and Liberation, and began appearing at rallies and marches with a PSL banner in places like San Francisco and New York.
