Act Now to Stop War and End Racism

Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (A.N.S.W.E.R.) is a coalition which is primarily focused on anti-war activities.

ANSWER was formed on September 14, 2001 in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. One of the sponsors of ANSWER is the International Action Center (IAC).

Due to a meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank set to take place in Washington, D.C. in late September, the International Action Center had already been working to secure permits for a demonstration in Washington D.C. for some time. On September 29, 2001, an ANSWER-organized protest took place in Washington DC as well as San Francisco.

ANSWER organized a April 20, 2002 demonstration in Washington D.C. The IMF and World Bank were meeting once again that weekend in D.C. ANSWER's demonstration was an anti-war protest, as well as a protest about the recent Israeli offensive in Palestine. On June 2, 2002, ANSWER held its first national conference in New York City.

In early October 2002, the US Congress voted to give President George W. Bush the authority to attack Iraq. ANSWER planned to have demonstrations in Washington D.C. and San Francisco. On October 25, 2002, the day before the demonstrations, the coalition that would become United for Peace and Justice met for the first time in Washington, D.C. On October 20, 2002, large numbers of people came out for the demonstrations against a possible war in Iraq. Shortly after this, liberal columnists began attacking ANSWER for their connections to the Workers World Party, for being too far left and whatnot.

On January 18, 2003 ANSWER had demonstrations in San Francisco and Washington D.C. in conjunction with protests taking place across the world. The timing also coincided with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. On February 15, 2003, massive protests across the United States and world happened to protest the looming invasion of Iraq. This was primarily organized by United for Peace and Justice in the United States, but ANSWER mobilized for it as well.

On March 15, 2003, protests against the war were organized by ANSWER in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. On March 20, 2003, the US invaded Iraq.

In mid-May 2003, ANSWER held its second national conference in New York City. On October 25, 2003, ANSWER held a demonstration to bring the troops home in Washington, D.C. which had participation from the Arab community as well as military families, and which was co-sponsored by ANSWER. On March 20, 2004, ANSWER and UFPJ co-coordinated a march in New York City.

On May 16, 2004, several prominent ANSWER members left the Workers World Party and formed the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Subsequently, the International Action Center started the Troops Out Now Coalition and have been organizing around that.
