signed timestamp

From Anarchopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

A signed timestamp is a digitally signed certificate proving the existence of a certain document at a given time.

The unique hash of the document data or the document itself is sent to a trusted third party (timestamping authority) that adds the timestamp and signs it with its private key. The authenticity of the timestamp is ensured by the digital signature.

Signed timestamps can be used to prove authorship and to protect original ideas from abusive patenting.
