non-human animals consume much more fossil fuel energy than they provide in food

Arguments[edit]

  1. For every calorie of fossil fuel input, we get back from meat products, at best, only one quarter of a calorie of food energy. A broiler hen returns 0.07 calories. Feedlot beef returns only 0.03 calories. In contrast, for every calorie of fossil fuel input in the energy intensive US plant foods (beans, grains and vegetables) return from 1.25 to 2.5 food calories. Roughly 40-80 times more than feedlot beef. Less developed countries return higher amounts. Up to 80 food calories of plant origin for every calorie of fossil fuel input.
  2. It takes 50 times as much energy from fossil fuels to supply a meat based diet as compared to a meat-free one.
