Outline[edit]

The world of Nineteen Eighty-Four exists in a state of perpetual war between the three major powers (Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia). At any given time, two of the three states are aligned against the third.

Oceania is the location of the novel's version of London, where Winston Smith, the main character, lives.

The official language of Oceania is Newspeak. The restructuring of the language is intended to ultimately eliminate even the possibility of unorthodox political and social thought, by eliminating the words needed to express it.

Ingsoc (portmanteau of “English Socialism”) is the political ideology of the totalitarian government of Oceania. The Party is continually rewriting the English language into Newspeak, a language whose concision limits the true denotation(s) of words and the ideas they represent; hence the esoteric Newspeak acronym “Ingsoc” replaced the Oldspeak “English Socialism”. Big Brother personifies the Party, as the ubiquitous face constantly depicted in posters and the telescreen, thus, Big Brother is constantly watching.

Emmanuel Goldstein is Public Enemy Number One of Oceania.
