'The Environment', meaning all of the Ecosystems on the planet Earth is a regrettable term, but so widely used that it is perhaps unavoidable. Ecology, the study of all ecosystems, whether they be human environments or natural ones is almost always more accurate; ecosystem is the word for small areas, their climate etc, the creatures that inhabit them, and the interlocking webs of relationships between those creatures. Environment small e is most accurate as a synonym for habitat of individual species or groups of species, but it also hints at the ecology of the habitat in an unspecific way.
