Britain has introduced the new 'points based' immigration system in 2009. The stated intention was to allow the immigration officials to make the decisions easier, which would result in a faster process. In reality the process has slowed down, and the foreighners found themselves under the threat of removal, deportation, and harrassment.

The new 'points based' immigration rules when applied to students represent a serious threat to campus democracy and freedom of speech. They require non-EU students and staff to have biometric ID cards, involve demands on the financial background of applicants and mean that staff are obliged to report students to the UK Border Agency when they have not attended regularly.
