Jokob Michael Reinhold Lenz (born 1751 January 12 in Sesswegen) was a Russian-born German poet and dramatist of the Strum und Drang period. He is considered an important forerunner of 19th-century naturalism and of 20th-century Expressionist theater. His best work is Der Hofmeister oder Vortheile der Privaterziehung ("The Tutor, or the Advantages of Private Education," 1774), and Die Soldaten ("The Soldiers," 1776).
