History

The rampART is a squat project established in a previously derelict building in Rampart Street, East London. It was initiated by a group of artists, community groups and political activists.

About Social Centers

Although more established in countries like Italy and Spain, the concept of these social centres has recently started in the UK, with new centers in Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol, Brighton, Oxford, Leeds and London.

Projects at RampART

Cultural activities and events:

Skill sharing and workshops;:

Resource exchange and other projects :

Not-for-Profit

These free spaces provide places to socialise, sitting and chatting with friends, neighbours or strangers in a friendly atmosphere - a chance to read a book from the library or browse through the newspapers - drink fair trade tea or coffee -or to eat your own lunch, or eat cheap meals made by volunteers.

These projects are run on an entirely voluntary basis by the people involved. They are not charity workers or social workers.

The projects are trying to encourage co-operation, solidarity and mutual aid. They are not a top-down services or commercial enterprises run for profit - instead they are funded day-to-day by donations given by the users, or raising funds through benefit events such as gigs, cafes or film nights.

It can be used for events, meetings, exhibitions, classes, workshops or whatever, It is possible to book a time, stick up some posters and do it.

One of the goals is to try provide a space for debate and to promote the exchange of views on a wide range of issues, topics and concerns. By trying to bring people together with a broad spectrum of ideas, ideals, lifestyles and beliefs.

It is open to all on the basis of equality for all. However, people who do not believe in such equality regardless of age, sex, race or religion etc. will not be welcome. Drug abuse, drug dealing, or any activity detrimental to other peoples use of the space, or local community, are not acceptable .

It is run by an open collective as an autonomous space and trying to make decisions effecting the project by consensus with regular meetings.
