Totalitarianism consists of any social system in which the de facto government controls virtually every aspect of the people's lives. All of them include lack of democratic workers' control over the means of production and widespread use of violence against the opponents. Totalitarianism is the antithesis of freedom. There are many different possible types of totalitarianism.

Forms of totalitarian government include fascism, Stalinism and theocracy.
