Totalitarianism(or totalitarian ruling) is a term used to describe a state which regulates and moniters every aspects of the citizen's public and private life. Examples of these states are Mao-controlled China, the Soviet Union, Vietnam, Cuba, and North Korea. "Totalitarian" regimes maintain power through tactics such as propaganda dissemintated through the mass media, economic control, restriction of free speech or press, mass surveilance (visual, audio, ETC..), and even the use of terror tactics against a specified group of people or against the entire state. Most scholars agree that the first "totalitarian" regimes were formed in the 20th century. These first regimes are Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and the Soviet Union. There are some scholars however, that believe the first "totalitarianism" was in china under the leadership of a prime minister by the name of Li Si (ca. 280 BC - September or October 208 BC). Li Si was a supporter of Legalism. He resticted all other political activities, destroyed literature, and killed scholars who differed from his ideals.
