Why?[edit]

One of the most easily eavesdropped types of communication on the Internet is that of text-based chat. A variety of IM spy tools are readily available to watch your ICQ, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger chat sessions by your family, employer, or government.

Other options include a tool like VPG that can allow the cut-and-paste of freshly-encrypted information from VPG to the chat window. This can be tedious but is compatable with every network. Similarly named PGP often has prohibitively large message blocks for exchange over chat networks (generally limited to only 200 characters or so.
