1. Targeting of predator species (or killing them in by-catch) removes predator species which would normally prey on smaller species. With the altered bio-diversity, certain species proliferate, lowering overall bio-diversity
2. Some species (such as shrimp, plankton, pilchards, sardines) are food for larger species. When taken, the other species are affected.
