The Revolutionary Internationalist Movement was formed in London on March 12, 1984. It is a movement of Maoist parties, some of which are engaged in People's War.

A few years before the founding of the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement (RIM), an international conference of Marxist-Leninist parties and organizations addressed a resolution to the Marxist-Leninists, workers, and oppressed of all countries. The Communist Party of Peru did not sign this resolution, issuing a critical appraisal of it.

In March 1984, at the second international conference of Marxist-Leninist parties and organizations, the Declaration of the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement was adopted and the RIM was formed. Twenty parties or organizations signed the resolution, including the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA (RCP-USA) and the Communist Party of Nepal (Mashal). The Communist Party of Peru (PCP) criticized this declaration as well, although it seemed to be looking at things more favorably. The PCP's criticisms did not become well-known for several years, which some said seemed to indicate a possible line split between the RCP-USA and PCP, but in 1988 the RCP-USA published a document on Marxism-Leninism-Maoism in which its views were in accord with those of the CPP.

On September 12, 1992, Chairman Gonzalo chairman of the PCP was captured by the Peruvian military, as were other members of the PCP central committee. Subsequently, the Peruvian government claimed that Gonzalo had called off the PCP guerrilla campaign. The question of whether or not this alleged surrender was valid, or if it had even happened at all, caused quite a hullaballoo in the PCP as well as the world Maoist movement, which one can read about in various Maoist newspapers and web pages if one were so inclined.

On February 13, 1996, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) launched a people's war in Nepal which is still actively ongoing as of 2005. RIM member the Communist Party of Nepal (Mashal) opposed this, and in 1998 they were expelled from the RIM. Shortly after, the RIM began associating with the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).

Revolutionary Internationalist Movement was also the name of an American Maoist group not affilliated with RCP-USA. After the founding in 1984 of the other movement called the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement, they changed their named to the Maoist Internationalist Movement so as to avoid confusion.
