The Young Socialist League was formed when the Young People's Socialist League left the Socialist Party and merged with the Independent Socialist League associated Socialist Youth League in the early-mid 1950s. It was the only radical youth group with any size for its time.

The left wing of the Young Socialist League were meeting with members of the Socialist Workers Party from early 1957 on. In the summer of 1957 the ISL voted to enter the Socialist Party/Social Democratic Federation (SP/SDF). The left YSLers were expelled in late 1957. Soon after they joined the Socialist Workers Party as its new youth group.
