Wayne Besen is a gay rights advocate in the United States. He is a former spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign.

Besen, a gay man, was never involved in the ex-gay movement but has interviewed hundreds of former and current ex-gays.

In 2000, he photographed ex-gay activist John Paulk in a Washington D.C. gay bar. Paulk claimed he was simply there to use the washroom, but Besen and other witnesses allege he was drinking and flirting for over twenty minutes. Besen went public with the story, and wrote about it in the book Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth, which was nominated for two Lambda Literary Awards in 2003.
