University of the Witwatersrand
The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg is a multi-campus South African state research university located in the northern areas of central Johannesburg. It is more commonly referred to as Wits University, or simply as Wits. "Witwatersrand" is Afrikaans for "Ridge of White Waters", and is pronounced as "Vitvaatersrunt" in Afrikaans; and as "Vitvaatersrand" in South African English. "Wits" is pronounced "Vits". Wits has its roots in the mining industry, as do Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand in general. It was originally established in 1896 in Kimberley as the South African School of Mines. It was moved to Johannesburg in 1904 and renamed the Transvaal Technical Institute, going through numerous name changes before being granted university status by the Parliament of South Africa in 1922.
