Shi'a view of Uthman

Main article: Uthman ibn Affan

This article is about the Shia view of Uthman ibn Affan, the third Sunni Caliph.

When Uthman converted to Islam he was bound and beaten by his uncle Hakam ibn Al-Aas.

Nayla bint Farasa was Uthman's wife.

He was eventually buried in Medina. Uthman was buried outside al-Baqi, but with later extensions, his grave was included in the area. Shia argue that the reason he was not buried alongside Muhammad and the two other caliphs, yet not even in the Muslim cemetery, is the view people had exemplified by a hadith in Sunni sources (History of Ibn Athir) where Aisha before leaving Uthman for mecca says:

'"Kill Na'thal (old fool), for he is a kafir (unbeliever)."

His wife sent a letter to Muawiya urging him to avenge Uthamn, however, he did nothing when Aisha ammased a great army to do just that.

In a Shia book it can be read:

"It is one of the ironies of the history of the Muslims that though Ayesha, Talha and Zubayr ibn al-Awwam openly instigated the people to kill Uthman, they have never been impeached in its tribunal. And what was there to prevent Muawiya himself from going to Medina to save his (Uthman's) life? Nothing! But he never did. He withheld his aid on purpose, and let Uthman die. But after his death, he made an alliance, in exchange for Egypt, with Amr ibn al-As, to "seek vengeance for Uthman's murder." As noted before, Amr was one of the most implacable enemies of Uthman, and probably was his real murderer."

He lived to 84 years old.

Election[edit]

Shia conclude that this consultation was riged by Umar to the extent that Ali could not win it, as is expresed in Nahj al Balagha and other books. However, Ali was included anyway to give the consultation credibility.
