The Principality of Freedonia is a state first self-established as the Republic of Freedonia in March 1992, declaring itself sovereign and independent. Until 1997, Freedonia remained a "hypothetical project". In the beginning few claimed Freedonian citizenship, however today there are several hundred Freedonians. The ethos of Freedonia is based on the philosophy of libertarianism.
Freedonia has its own constitution (1997; revised 2000), a national anthem and previously had a central bank (Bank of Freedonia), which has since been dissolved. The Head of State is Prince John I., the prime minister is Dustin Gawrylow.
Interestingly, the micronation does not claim any territory and thus does not fulfill the conditions to be a state according to the Montevideo Convention. In the past, Freedonian efforts have included building artificial islands, but these plans have been abandoned. They have maintained a long-standing desire to purchase the Pitcairn Islands from Great Britain. There have also been efforts to buy a piece of land in Awdal in unrecognised Somaliland, but negotiations have so far been fruitless.
