Not in Our Name
Not In Our Name is a project focused on anti-war activities as well as ending domestic repression in the US.
On March 7, 2002 a letter was sent out about a meeting coming up that would launch the Not in Our Name (NION) project. The meeting took place on March 23, 2002 in St. Marys Church in Harlem, in New York City. The meeting adopted proposals from the letter. One of these proposals was for a Pledge of Resistance which was written in April 2002, and distributed at the ANSWER-organized April 20, 2002 protest in Washington D.C.
On May 12, 2002, the first national anti-war concert since 9/11 took place with "Not In Our Name" as it's theme. The show was a benefit for the Artists Network of Refuse and Resist. Refuse and Resist was one of the initiators of NION.
On October 6, 2002, tens of thousands of people from all over the country attended NION's "Days of Resistance" rallies across the country to protest the upcoming war in Iraq.
On January 27, 2003, NION published an ad in the New York Times protesting the upcoming war in Iraq that was signed by many famous people and well-known leftists like Spike Lee, Noam Chomsky, Susan Sarandon and Gore Vidal. NION also held events that day as well across the country.
On March 20, 2003, the US invaded Iraq. NION has continued to work on anti-war and domestic repression issues.
