One of the most prominent and successful examples of the use of nonviolent direct action in Australia has been the environmental group North East Forest Alliance (NEFA) which ran a successful campaign to protect old growth forests.

NEFA's campaign involved over a decade of blockades, and other forms of direct action including a significant occupation of the entire New South Wales Forestry department building in November 1992. NEFA also ran a number of court actions in conjunction with its direct action campaigns and was successful in most of these.

The history of NEFA's campaigns is well documented including a case study provided in [1] The History of the NEFA campaign has also been explored by Aidan Ricketts, in a book chapter "Om Gaia Dudes", which explores the cultural significance of the old growth forests campaign
