New Orleans is a city in the swamp near along the Mississippi River about 100 miles up from the Gulf of Mexico.
Historically, the city has been claimed by the governments of France, Spain, Confederate States of America, the state of Louisiana and the United States of America. As of 2005, only the first three have gone away.
The city is known for jazz, food, Mardi Gras, and hedonism.
Notable New Orleanians have included Louis Armstrong, George Herriman, Professor Longhair, Dr. John, John Kennedy Toole, Andrei Codrescu, and Poppy Z. Brite.
