The 2009 Luquan protest was a protest that occurred on October 21, 2009 in Wikipedia:Luquan, Hebei, People's Republic of China (WP). The dispute was the result of the Shengze real estate company (盛泽房地产开å‘å…¬å¸) beginning construction before reaching a compensation agreement with villagers from Shenhou (申åŽ). The villagers eventually blocked a national highway for 6 hours to protest the construction work.[1]
Protest[edit]
The incident started when a woman villager who attempted to stop construction on her farmland was attacked and beaten by workers from the Shengze real estate company.[2] On October 21, 2009 more than 20 villagers went to the construction site to try to prevent the construction work. Angry villagers carried the woman to the Luquan section of national highway 307 and blocked the traffic.[1] More than 300 villagers joined in Wikipedia:Luquan, Hebei to block the highway.[2] The highway runs a length of 1,342 kilometers linking provinces and regions of Wikipedia:Hebei, Wikipedia:Shanxi, Wikipedia:Shaanxi and Wikipedia:Ningxia.[1]
Aftermath[edit]
Traffic was restored after the highway was blocked for 6 hours.[1] The local government promised to block the developer's construction. The injured woman was sent to the hospital. Five people involved in the violence was arrested.[1] A researcher at the Wikipedia:Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said that blocking highways is an economical way for villagers to attract attention. Usually government officials ignore them.[1]
