Pornography (WP) had been available over the internet (WP) since the 1980s, it was the availability of widespread public access to the World Wide Web in 1991 that led to an expansion of Wikipedia:Internet pornography. In a cover story in Wikipedia:New York Times Magazine called "Naked Capitalists: There's No Business Like Porn Business", author Wikipedia:Frank Rich suggested that pornography is bigger than any of the major league sports, perhaps bigger than Hollywood.[1]

According to a 2011 research[2]

  • Every second, 28,258 users are watching pornography on the internet
  • Every second, 372 people are typing the word "adult" into search engines[3]
  • 40 million American people regularly visit porn sites
  • 35% of all internet downloads are related to pornography
  • 25% of all search engine (WP) queries are related to pornography, that is 68 million search queries a day.
  • 1 of every 3 porn viewers is a woman.
  • Search engines get 116,000 queries every day related to child pornography.
  • 34% of internet users have experienced unwanted exposure to pornographic content through ads, pop up ads, misdirected links or emails.
  • 2.5 billion Wikipedia:emails sent or received everyday contain porn.
  • On the average, every 39 minutes, a new pornography video is being created in the Wikipedia:United States.[3]

According to National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families, 2010, 47% of Christians in the United States report that pornography is a problem in their home.[4]

Internet pornography revenue[edit]

  • 12% of the websites (WP)(i.e. 24.6 million) on the internet are pornographic.
  • The global market of internet pornography is worth $4.9 billion dollars.[5]
  • In the United States (WP) alone, Wikipedia:internet pornography generates more revenue than all combined revenues of all of the NFL, Major League Baseball and NBA sports franchises.[6]
