History[edit]

In 1994, the company moved its offices to Passaic and became an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) company a year later. Hercules purchased Cloroben Chemical Company, a manufacturer of drain cleaning products, and consolidated manufacturing operations in Passaic in 1999.[4] The company earned ISO 9001 registration in 2003 and is currently certified to ISO 9001:2008.[5]

Innovation[edit]

In 2002 Hercules co-founded OateySCS, a supply chain organization used by plumbing wholesalers to order Hercules, Oatey, and other major brands of plumbing products from a single source. [6]

Bankruptcy[edit]

On August 22, 2008 the company filed a voluntary petition for Chapter 11 reorganization. The filing was made for the sole purpose of facilitating a comprehensive resolution for over 7,000 asbestos lawsuits filed against the company. The company expected to continue operations without interruption during the reorganization process.[7]

The company successfully emerged from bankruptcy on December 22, 2009 with the confirmation of its plan of reorganization by the State Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey. The key result of the confirmation was that the company no longer had any asbestos-related liabilities or obligations. All present and future asbestos-related claims against the company are forever channeled to an independent asbestos trust.

Sale of Assets[edit]

On December 30, 2011, Hercules Chemical Co., Inc. completed a transaction with HCC Holdings, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Oatey Company, for the sale of substantially all of its assets.
