Godwin's law

From Anarchopedia

Godwin's law is the name of a rule of discourse and argument that is attributed to a Usenet discussion by Mike Godwin in 1990:

"As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."

It is used as a measurement for incidents of reductio ad Hitlerum in discussion, and is also used to discredit further discussion on a matter when the logical fallacy has been committed.

In anarchist and anti-fascist thought[edit]

Godwin's law, while not usually used on a pre-emptive basis, is often used to shut down further discussion or discredit the further explanation of the topic by the breaching individual. Critics cite this as being a cop-out on the discussion or scrutiny of fascism, nazism, totalitarianism, moralism or authoritarianism.
