David Cate
David Cate was born September 10th, 1962, David Cate is the son of Alvin and Sue Cate. His first home was in Jefferson City, TN and he moved around from Nashville, Hendersonville, Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol and Mt. Carmel, TN before settling in his home of Kingsport, TN.
David graduated from Sullivan Central High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He is currently the New Media Director for The GoTriCities Network - an Internet production agency and software company owned by The Kingsport Times-News.
With a career spanning over 25 years in the communications industry, David's first job started as a disc-jockey working for WKPT-AM in Kingsport. He eventually began to work for WQUT-FM in 1980 and worked at several radio stations before leaving to begin a career in the newspaper industry in 1983.
While working for the Kingsport Times-News, David received several advertising awards from The Tri-Cities Metropolitan Advertising Federation, The Tennessee Press Association and The Southeastern Advertising Federation for graphic design and presentation of newspaper ads and publications.
In the late eighties, David purchased his first Apple IIsi computer. Purchased with a business loan from Executive Park National Bank, he was one of the first freelance desktop publishing professionals in Northeast Tennessee. Creating anything from newspaper ads to corporate branding, he cultured a sense of professional distinction that proved successful with many distinct publications in the region.
David's interest in graphic design was augmented with the Internet. In the mid-1990's he formed a partnership with David Sieg and ZFX - the region's first Internet Service Provider and created many of the region's first Internet websites including Appalachia.com, Times-News Online, GoTriCities.com and several other high-traffic commercial website designs.
In addition to his passion for interactive media, David is a professional musician. Taught by his father and grandfather, he began to play guitar and switched to piano after hearing Elton John. He began playing music at age 10 and stayed active throughout his education playing in high school and college jazz groups, plus several bands of his own.
While in high school, he partnered with life-long friend, Derek Helvey to form Infinity. This collaboration with David Wiles, Kathy Urquhart, David Meyerand and Jim Thweatt was a formative impression on David and he later formed several bands throughout his college years including The TenPenny band with Kathy Urquhart, David Sproles, Marvin Thompson, Kevin Dolan, Steve Thompson and Ray Berry.
David married twice - once out of high school to Cynthia Humphries and then to Michelle Leonard. During his marriage to Michelle he attended Abundant Living Christian Fellowship and performed contemporary Christian music throughout the region.
Divorced in 1987, David rejoined his friend Derek Helvey and began a new band name The Watch with Derek on guitars, Bo Bradley on voice and bass and Chris Jones on drums. Together they were recognized as Knoxville's most promising new band in 1992 and wrote and recorded several original songs including 'The Law of Diminishing Return," "Plant Life," "At The Moment," "WatchSong" and "New World Order."
During the mid-nineties, David was the musicial director for a community variety show in Kingsport called Showtime. Performing and arranging complete musicial scores, this production was presented for 5 years to audiences of thousands.
David has performed with Ralph Emery, HeadEast, T.G. Shepard, John Cowan, Danny and The Juniors and several other artists.
His current assignment is with Reagan Boggs, an original singer/songwriter from Southwest Virginia. David plays piano and organ with the band and continues to culture media and music in the Tri-Cities region. He lives along with his cat Dido and finds interests in many activites including reading, music, traveling and sofware development.
