Dr Bruce Burley Copley (born 22 March 1949 in Pretoria, South Africa) is a holistic animator, educator, musician, entertainer, sportsman and scholar. He is the founder of the company AAHA Learning[1] whose stated aim is to re-ignite people's passion for learning through the application of holistic principles and practices.

Education and Academic Career[edit]

Dr Copley is the recipient of numerous academic degrees from 3 universities in South Africa (Pretoria, Unisa and Witwatersrand) as well as post doctorates from Simon Fraser University (Canada) and San Diego State University (USA). He lectured at Rhodes University[2] and founded the Rhodes University Sports Science Institute in 1980[3]. He completed his Ph.D[4] at the Witwatersrand University in 1980 under the supervision of Professor Phillip Tobias, one of the world's acknowledged leading authorities on the evolution of mankind. His work is referenced in Professor Tobias's 2005 book Into the Past[5].

He was one of the youngest lecturers ever to be appointed at the University of Pretoria in 1972[6]. Dr Copley is the author of numerous research articles in Sports Science with a particular focus on tennis[7][8]. Dr Copley is also credited with seminal research on circus performers reported in the 1987 book Circus by Manser[9].

Dr Copley is a multi-instrumentalist who uses music and sound to counter stress and facilitate healing[10] and the original fire to convey business and management messages and lessons[11].

Recognition and Awards[edit]

Dr Copley was awarded the prestigious British Association Silver Medal in 1982 for outstanding Scientific Research[12] and was the first Sports scientist to receive this award.

He was an accomplished provincial squash player and a South African University and nationally ranked tennis player who was listed in the "International Who's Who in Tennis" [13]. Dr Copley was best known for his pioneering tennis research and publications and is credited with the most comprehensive publication listing on the official website of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) [8]. His book Scientific Tennis[14] (with a foreword written by Owen Williams[15]) was prescribed for all certified tennis coaches in South Africa. He has also contributed to notable and well known work done by colleagues[16].

Dr Copley's feats with the Australian Didgeridoo have received international recognition[17][18][19] and he is credited with first discovering and demonstrating that by playing a particular note it is possible to create a fire in the Didgeridoo[18]. More recently he has demonstrated his discovery of the fact that a normal monotone Vuvuzela can be transformed into a multi-toned "Rainbow" Vuvuzela using a variety of playing techniques, without modifying the instrument in any way [20] [21] [22] [23].

Professional Contributions[edit]

Dr Copley has spent more than 20 years helping international organizations to apply his holistic approach[19][24]. He has worked closely with some notable personages and institutions, some of which include The Amy Biehl Foundation [25] and Symphonia Consulting and Dr Peter Block[26]. He has received numerous glowing acknowledgements to the uniqueness and value of his approach from many high-profile sources[27][24].

In 1991 Dr Copley and the late Dr Leo Buscaglia discussed the topic "Only you can make the difference in the new SA" during the first live MNET video conference broadcast in South Africe[28].

Dr Copley is a passionate believer in the value of community participation and service and is constantly involved in numerous community projects[29].

Personal Life[edit]

He is the father of Donovan Copley, lead singer of the South African band Hotwater[11][30], and the actor Sharlto Copley who starred in the movies District 9[31] and The A-Team[32]. He also has a daughter Marisa who is a fashion designer and owner of the WithOut clothing franchise. His youngest sister Lauren Copley was a South African singing protégée who represented South Africa at the Tokyo Song Festival and whose songs Kentucky Blues[33] and It's Too Late Now[34] were chart toppers in the early 70's in South Africa, that received Golden record status.
