Battle of Stalingrad

The Battle of Stalingrad was an important battle of World War II. It was the ultimate showdown between the massive armies of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Adolf Hitler, Fuhrer of Germany, greatly desired to capture Stalingrad (now Volgograd) not only because of its industrial significance but also because of it being named after Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union. Although at times Germany held up to 90% of the city, the Soviets never let go and eventually encircled the entire German army and captured it. This is widely considered to be one of the turning points of World War II.
