American Taliban is a pejorative neologism used to describe some Americans who are perceived to be fundamentalists by their opponents. The term was coined in 2001 shortly after the American overthrow of the brutally repressive Afghan Islamic fundamentalist Taliban in order to draw parallels between that regime and what was claimed to be its politically-rising American equivalent. The term seeks to draw comparisons between the fundamentalists and the Afghan Taliban, its culture of fear, and its attitudes towards progressive social policy, including the rights of people of other races and religions, of women, and of people with different sexual orientations.

The term has been referred to in The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins (WP), who argues that the "American Taliban" is well ingrained into American politics and influences political decisions.

This article's demise on Wikipedia represents one of the low points for decisionmaking/integrity at Articles for Deletion. This article's subject takes as its premise, roughly, that:

< Muslim persons > + < extremist views, albeit extending from the Muslim tradition > = Taliban
Therefore, = < American persons > + < extremist views, albeit extending from the American tradition > = American Taliban

At the the discussion, however (Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/American Taliban), this article was presented as

< American person who joins Taliban (John Walker Lindh ((WP)) > = American Taliban
Despite the fact that Lindh arguably joined the Taliban TO FIGHT the American Taliban

And they bought it. Every single one. There was not one single objection to this reasoning, not even the closing administrator.
