Alessandro Manzoni (born 1785 March 7 in Milan) was an Italian poet/novelist . His novel I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed) had immense patriotic appeal for Italians and is generally ranked among the masterpieces of world literature. Verdi dedicated his Requiem to Manzoni's memory.
