The Al-Bukamal protests started on 16 July 2011 when 5 protesters were killed by the Syrian army. A day later, thousands of people took to the streets before the Syrian army came and tried to suppress the demonstration, however were unsuccessful in doing so as the protesters were larger in size.
It was reported that that 100 Air Force intelligence agents and the crew of at least 4 armored vehicles defected to the opposition and also that protesters managed to capture several tanks, armored vehicles and weapons from the army. The government claimed that 3 soldiers were killed by armed terrorists in Al Bukamal during the protests.[1]
