Old Bridge, New Jersey shooting[edit]

On August 31, 2012, a 23-year-old supermarket employee shot to death two co-workers at a Wikipedia:Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township, Wikipedia:New Jersey. The shooter, identified as ex-Marine Terence Tyler, then took his life.

Shooting[edit]

Terence Tyler began working at a Wikipedia:Pathmark supermarket in the middle of August 2012 on U.S. Route 9 in Old Bridge Township, Wikipedia:New Jersey, a suburban township located across from Wikipedia:Staten Island, Wikipedia:New York. Less than two weeks later, on the morning of Friday, August 31, 2012, Tyler left his job as overnight clerk at about 3:30am. He returned shortly afterward wearing desert camouflage gear and carrying a Wikipedia:.45-caliber Wikipedia:handgun and an Wikipedia:AK-47 assault rifle. Although the store was closed at this time, twelve employees were still inside or near the store, performing administrative, stocking, and maintenance tasks. Tyler shot at an employee standing outside the store and blew out several store windows. He then entered the store and fired at five workers in an aisle, killing two of them. A number of others escaped through a back door when the shooting began. In all, Tyler fired 16 rounds.

Suspect[edit]

Terence Tyler was raised in Wikipedia:New York City. He was in the Wikipedia:U.S. Marines, stationed in Twentynine Palms, Wikipedia:California when he first sent messages on his Wikipedia:Twitter account in 2009 that indicated a desire to kill his then co-workers.[1] He was discharged from the U.S. Marines in 2010 after being hospitalized for depression, which may have been linked to the passing of his mother from Wikipedia:cancer in 2007.[2] After being discharged, Tyler lived in Wikipedia:San Diego, California, before moving to Wikipedia:New Jersey in June 2012. Tyler posted information on both Wikipedia:Twitter and Wikipedia:Facebook accounts indicating a fascination with killing. Family and friends described Tyler as unusually quiet.

Victims[edit]

Tyler killed Christina LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Breen, 24. He then drew his handgun and killed himself. LoBrutto and Breen both graduated from Wikipedia:Old Bridge High School and worked as cashiers. It is believed that Tyler was not targeting them specifically.
