- California Assemblyman Willie Brown starts an annual tradition of introducing legislation to repeal the state's sodomy law. He was finally successful in 1975.

- May 18 - Minneapolis, Minnesota - FREE (Fight Repression of Erotic Expression) is formed at the University of Minnesota. It is the first student-led group in the United States for gay and lesbian collegians; it is also the first gay and lesbian organization in the state of Minnesota. Its successor is now called the Queer Student Cultural Center.
