Tausch is an active participant in the Wikipedia:liberation theology movement and the ecumenical dialogue between the major world religions. He is involved in the study of the quantitative effects of Wikipedia:globalization on social systems. He is also a frequent contributor of articles to magazines in Austria, such as Das Jüdische Echo. He is a member of the "honorary committees" of the Wikipedia:Centro Argentino de Estudios Internacionales[1] in Buenos Aires and the journal Wikipedia:Entelequia,[2] and of the Wikipedia:editorial boards of the European Research Studies Journal,[3] and the Journal of Globalization Studies.[4]

Tausch has been married since 1978 and has three adult daughters.

Academic career

Tausch received his PhD in political science from Salzburg University in 1976 and his Wikipedia:habilitation from Innsbruck University. Presently, he is associate professor (Universitaetsdozent) of Political Science at the Wikipedia:University of Innsbruck, and visiting professor of Wikipedia:Economics at the Wikipedia:Corvinus University of Budapest. He was previously also visiting associate professor at the Department of Political Science, Wikipedia:University of Hawaii at Manoa and guest researcher at the Wikipedia:Social Science Research Center Berlin).

Publications

As of January 2011, he has authored, co-authored, or edited 15 books in English and 7 in German, and over 200 scholarly and non-technical articles and miscellaneous publications in 7 languages in 28 countries, including books for Wikipedia:Dutch University Press, Wikipedia:Nova Publishers, and Wikipedia:Palgrave Macmillan. His works are also available on freely available peer-reviewed websites, including the Wikipedia:World Systems Archive, Wikipedia:Global Development Network, Wikipedia:Social Science Research Network, and IDEAS.

Scholarly work

In the fall of 1977, Tausch obtained a position as assistant professor of political science at Innsbruck University after finishing his PhD. Together with Wikipedia:Otmar Höll and Wikipedia:Kunibert Raffer, Tausch pioneered world-system and dependency studies in Austria from the mid 1970s onwards.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, Tausch closely worked with the late Australian political economist Ted Wheelwright, the Swedish development and peace researcher Wikipedia:Björn Hettne, the Polish development researcher Wikipedia:Zbigniew Bablewski, and the Finnish development and peace researcher and politician Wikipedia:Kimmo Kiljunen in the framework of the Wikipedia:European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI)) working group on development theory. The results of these efforts include the United Nations University study (1989).

In peace and development research, Tausch was one of the first authors to present sceptical assessments of the Wikipedia:perestroika and transformation processes in the Wikipedia:Soviet Union. His Russlands Tretmühle (English: Russia's treadmill) predicted a re-hardening of the Russian regime.

His later work, written after his entry into public service in 1992, is about the analysis of social policy and migration in the new wider Europe after the shock therapies which the region experienced.

After returning to Vienna from his work as a diplomat in Poland, Tausch's publications especially dealt with analyses of the contradictions of the process of EU-enlargement, with cross-national aspects of pension reform and with the never-ending debate about Wikipedia:Islam and development.

During the last decade, his works contributed to the debate about Wikipedia:Islamophobia. This has become a defining pattern of his writings after the turn of the millennium: opposition to Wikipedia:Salafism (salafist distortions of the Muslim Faith), but also opposition to Islamophobia. He was among the first to study quantitative aspects of Muslim poverty in Europe.

As a book editor, Tausch later worked particularly closely with the British economist Wikipedia:Syed Mansoob Murshed. His own empirical works on the relationships between Islam and development patterns, were particularly well received in the Muslim world, and were based on all the countries with available data.

The Turkish political scientists Wikipedia:Bulent Aras and Wikipedia:Suat Kiniklioglu actively championed the reception of Tausch's quantitative works in the two leading political science journals in Turkey, Alternatives. Turkish Journal of International Relations and Insight Turkey.

The latest chapter in Tausch's analysis of Islam and development is the systematic analysis of the data from the Wikipedia:European Social Survey and the Wikipedia:World Values Survey, which contradict alarmist views of Muslim migration and Muslim integration in Europe, and argue in favor of what Tausch calls a 'Lisbon process perspective on Muslim minorities in Europe'. On the Lisbon process, he particularly closely worked and published together with the Muslim scholar, Wikipedia:Almas Heshmati.

His recent writings on pension reform were influenced by Wikipedia:Franco Modigliani and Wikipedia:Robert Holzmann, social protection department director at the Wikipedia:World Bank. He contributed to the memorial volume, dedicated to the Nobel laureate in economics, Wikipedia:Franco Modigliani.

Apart from sharing his analytical academic perspectives with high echelons of the Austrian foreign and international social policy establishment, Tausch's publications appeared in the publication series of important foreign policy think tanks in Austria, Argentina, Luxembourg, Poland, Russia and Turkey. In 2007, he was a speaker at the "Davos of the East", the Wikipedia:International Economic Forum in Krynica, Poland.

He has become a regular contributor to the analytical journal of the Wikipedia:Austrian Armed Forces, Österreichische Militärische Zeitschrift, to the Moscow-based Wikipedia:IMEMO Institute's Wikipedia:Mirovaya ekonomika i mezhdunarodnye otnosheniya, and to the widely circulated Wikipedia:Europäische Rundschau.
