busking on the West Coast of the United States

The West Coast, including the Pacific Northwest, is a cultural hotbed of busking in the United States.

Hippies

The current hippie counterculture of busking on the West Coast is strong. Many of the elder buskers in America came from the Grateful Dead/Oregon Country Fair/Santa Cruz/New Vaudeville circuit where they were able to frequently interact. Every year, the Oregon Country Fair hosts a large array of well-known buskers, sometimes referred to as a family reunion of the groups. The West Coast in the U.S. bred a new population of buskers in the 1970s, often on the heels of Dead tours and Dead parking lots, and most of whom are still practicing busking.
