Society for Humanistic Judaism
The Society for Humanistic Judaism, founded in 1969 by Rabbi Sherwin Wine [1] [2], promotes a human-centered philosophy that celebrates traditional Jewish culture, but combines it with humanist, non-theistic values.
Humanistic Judaism celebrates Jewish holidays and life-cycle events with ceremonies that draw on, but also go beyond, traditional Jewish literature. Its rituals are drawn from historical Jewish traditions, but are rewritten with a viewpoint that focuses on people. For example, the traditional phrase "You shall love the Lord your God" is rewritten as "We revere the best in man." [3]
The Society for Humanistic Judaism has 10,000 members in 30 congregations spread throughout the United States and Canada [2].
