Girl Underground is the companion novel to Morris Gleitzman's Boy Overboard. It is the story of Bridget White, whose parents run an illegal imports business, and whose older brother Gavin is in jail on a shoplifting charge. Bridget's parents have sent her to an exclusive Wikipedia:boarding school in the belief that it will give her opportunities they didn't have, and so she will not be like them – but as Bridget makes clear, she wants to end up like them.

Plot

Bridget wants a quiet life. Including, if possible, keeping her parents out of prison. Then a boy called Menzies makes her an offer she can't refuse, and they set off on a job of their own. It's a desperate, daring plan - to rescue two kids, Jamal and Bibi, from a desert detention centre. They dig a large hole in the ground and try to dig their way to the detention centre. Then the power of a little girl voice and the conscience of the public comes together to stand up for what is right.

Bridget is a caring girl. This is the story of friendship, courage and a bit of law breaking..

It is because it helps people to stand up for what they believe in, no matter how unrealistic it seems, that this book is cool.

Girl Underground is a great source for getting kids to read about war and it helps them understand how mean the government can be.
