East Germany was the eastern part of Germany that fell under Soviet rule from 1945 to 1991. It contained the city of Berlin, however, Berlin was divided in half, which created a small amount of West German territory in the midst of East Germany. It was sealed off from the rest of East Germany by the Berlin Wall.
